Eco Fair at Brooks for Earth Day

Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day, the Brooks Environmental Club organized an ECO Fair and welcomed elementary school students from across the district. The fair featured interactive stations and hands-on activities focused on various sustainability topics and initiatives. A few of the topics that students explored among others included:

  • Deforestation and the impact it has on our Earth
  • How to properly plant a Douglas Fir tree along with an in-person demonstration
  • Practicing daily sustainability such as preparing a zero-waste lunch
  • The impact of plastic on sea turtles throughout their lives
  • How to creatively reuse recyclables for arts and crafts
  • Sorting through garbage and identifying what goes in which bin
  • Sustainable clothing and how to repurpose and reuse materials

Additionally, three Grade 11 members of the Environmental Club created a "Climate Action Tracking" challenge. This initiative encouraged students to complete actions such as eating vegetarian for a day, washing laundry in cold water, planting a tree, and avoiding the use of single-use plastics, for example, all aimed at reducing the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. The goal of this challenge is to help measure the real-life effects of the Eco Fair and to show kids how to put the things they learned into practice.
